Be Your Own Test Pilot

So I’m about halfway into watching The Secret History: Howard Hughes, Bizarre Billionaire and I thought now would be as good a time as any to stop being so lazy and get back to blogging.   What I found most interesting about Howard’s story wasn’t the empire he built, his mental disorder or even his womanizing it was that he insisted on being the pilot for each of the test flights of his newest aircrafts.  I’d like to think I share that trait with Howard in that I love being the one to test out new social media tools and different forms of marketing to get myself and my show In The Mix out there.  Sometimes it doesn’t work out as planned and sometimes you crash and burn as Howard did several times but you learn from your mistakes and carry on.  When I interviewed Chris Brogan he told me to “fail a whole heck of a lot, because if you’re trying and labbing and making more things happen you’ll get to success a lot faster than reading about other people doing it.”  I think that’s great advice, but what do you think?

I don’t think trying something out and having it fail is always a mistake. Yes, you learn from the experience, but sometimes its just about timing. Also you have to look at other people because it might give you another approach you might not have thought about. So yes good advise but dont count out what you can learn from other peoples mistakes as well….

I completely agree Frank – it’s all a learning experience and you gotta keep trying out new approaches to see what works best for you
